Overview

Here at Blackbutt Flooring, we specialise in supply or supply and installation, with availability in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide.

Blackbutt Flooring is an Australian Classic Hardwood that is beyond any fashion and has complemented Australian interiors for decades. It rates as a durable timber displaying a natural blend of tones and grains.

It is a classic hardwood that is now offered in several pre-finished engineered options, improving the sustainability of our forests whilst creating an efficient flooring option that once installed is ready to live on.

Our Ranges are pre-finished and include the popular semi-gloss smooth, satin smooth and the contemporary and more tactile brushed matt finish.

Our Engineered Blackbutt Flooring options are an “overlaid floor” meaning that they are not mechanically fixed to joists, then sanded and polished like traditional Tongue and Groove solid floor boards.

Instead, they come to site prefinished in typical long lengths of 1820mm with widths ranging 135 – 186 mm. Being approximately 15mm thick they are either floated or direct stuck and pinned upon existing and suitable sub floors being yellow tongue, ply, concrete or over existing tiles and floorboards.

Engineered Blackbutt Flooring promotes a more sustainable use of our hardwood resources whilst achieving increase stability.

Blackbutt engineered flooring incorporates a top level of solid Blackbutt typically 4.2 mm thick, known as the “wear layer”. This is adhered to a ply core or base that uses farmed or faster growing species, to make up the balance of the thickness being, 12 – 15mm in total.

Most in our Blackbutt Hardwood Flooring Range can be re-sanded just like a traditional hardwood tongue and groove floorboards, as even these traditional boards can only be sanded a few times given that you can only sand so much from the top of the boards given the tongue and groove profiling.

The Ranges

All Blackbutt Flooring range options are available from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide. We both supply only or supply and install, with clients dealing directly with us.

Our Select Blackbutt Flooring Range: Incorporates the use of Standard to Better than Standard Grade 4.2mm thick Blackbutt Timber as “wear layer”, upon a Hevea core, hence being an Engineered Floor.

Our ECO Range of Blackbutt Flooring: Offers options that share the Blackbutt aesthetic whilst providing cost effective options in either actual and Blackbutt look.

From our ECO 3.0 – 0.6 mm Blackbutt Timber “wear layer” on a selection of stable core material. To our price pointed “high end” Laminate Blackbutt Flooring and the “new” Waterproof Vinyl Plank on a waterproof core and integrated under lay.

Grading of our Blackbutt

Blackbutt Hardwood Flooring has many natural features that reflect the wild characteristics of the selected tree. Floors display the true nature of the timber species with variations in colour, tone and grain to be expected.

The features seen in Blackbutt are gum veins & gum pockets, insect trails, knots, surface checking and burls. When your Engineered Blackbutt Flooring, arrives on site, each box will have a blend of appearance grades within.

Our SELECT Range of Blackbutt Flooring is best described as Standard or Better Grade Blackbutt 4.5mm “wear layer” upon a stable Hevea or Rubberwood Core.

The core is a plantation species that yields natural latex. When the trees have reached an age where latex yield is unviable, the trees are harvested for lumber. This process of felling and replanting occurs every 25 to 30 years. This represents a good usage of non-productive timber whilst making effective use of the carbon stored.

This hardwood species used for the core has similar characteristics to Blackbutt, so provides a compatible material that can be machined precisely with great dimensional stability that remains stable given changes in temperature, moisture, and humidity, out performing better than softwood or HDMF core products.

Our ECO Range of Blackbutt Flooring for economy purposes utilises Medium Feature and Standard Grades. We also use a lighter “wear layer” too meet all budgets and aesthetic requirements. This range utilises well-constructed multiplied core that results in greater stability and several installation options.

Medium Feature / Standard Grade to AS 2796Summary of our Grades

This shows random gum veins, burls, insect trails and other unusual grain effects. It is a unique and increasingly popular grade. Displays more rustic and random nature of Blackbutt and is perfect for those who prefer a natural appearance.

Standard Grade / Better than Standard Grade to AS 2796

This shows selective gum veins, burls, insect trails and other unusual grain effects this merged with selected Blackbutt with smoother natural characteristic.

Blackbutt Hardwood Flooring is a natural material. Variation in appearance and properties is an enticing part of designing and building with real timber and should be expected. Samples indicate tone and feel of the timber. Each board is different and will add up to be a typical Blackbutt Floor, unique from all other timbers and yes … absolutely Australian.

Installation

Engineered Blackbutt Hardwood Flooring can be installed in several ways.

Floated Installations:

All Blackbutt Floor boards are profiled with a Click Lock jointing system on all four sides, this allows a glue and nail free installation, if so desired. Meaning that boards are not fixed to your sub floor but float upon it as a single plate.

A ten-millimetre expansion gap is left around all walls and fixtures and is trimmed with either 19 mm skirting boards and available matching trims at door thresholds, sliders or tiled areas.

Blackbutt boards can be installed as a floating floor upon standard or acoustically rated underlays perfect for Strata Apartments and upon concrete slabs or renovations where several substrates exist. Given a level sub floor, meaning no more than 3 mm deviation over 3000 mm, a floated install gives a positive feel under foot and near

a typical sound of a traditionally laid floor. It however makes life’s disasters immediately repairable given the ability to replace boards with greater ease than fully direct stick options.

Stuck / Pinned Installations:

Blackbutt Hardwood Flooring can also be installed using appropriate flooring adhesives or a combination of adhesive and secret nails / pins. Depending on the type of sub floor that exist, we can advise on how best to install. Options include Fully Direct Stick application utilising appropriate Moisture Barriers and Adhesive applied by 5mm notch trowels typically upon concrete slab. Or a hybrid of Direct Stick and Pinning upon timber, ply or yellow tongue substrates.

About Blackbutt Hardwood Flooring

We source our Blackbutt Hardwood also known as Eucalyptus Pilularis from plantations and native forests established in Australia where sustainable forests have been created and managed.

Blackbutt Hardwood is a renewable resource, when mature trees are harvested, a young tree grows in its place and a few decades later is ready for harvesting again. Australia’s vast forests are carefully, conservatively managed to ensure a responsible amount of wood is harvested.

Traditionally Blackbutt Hardwoods are from the coastal regions of New South Wales and South East Queensland and can be found from Bega in New South Wales up to Maryborough in Queensland. It is generally readily available in these areas.

Blackbutt Hardwood Flooring has an even texture. The grain can be interlocked but it is generally straight, making it appealing for interior flooring and joinery. The heartwood of Blackbutt Hardwood ranges from golden yellow to pale straw to brown, occasionally a slight pinkish colour may be present. The sapwood, which is not always easy to distinguish, is much paler in appearance. Small to feature gum veins may also be visible.

Blackbutt gets its name from the tree withstanding bush fires within the course of its life. Displaying rough black bark at the bases caused by charring during bush fires. Blackbutt is ‘half bark, which means it has rough, fibrous bark on the lower trunk with the upper trunk and branches normally being smooth and whitish to yellow in colour. The bark sheds away in strips in the upper part of the trunk, leaving smooth branches, often with insect ‘scribbles’ on the bark.

Blackbutt Hardwood Flooring, comes from forests that are managed by strict Federal and State regulations. Much has change since open slather cutting of timber. Now managed as a valuable and sustainable industry, with only approximately 6 % of Australian Forests being available for harvesting and only 1 % appropriate for use each year.

Forestry Industry is now working in a managed format to ensure that our 149 million hectares of native forest this being the highest land cover per capita in the world is effectively managed.

Most of our forest resources are managed under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) this an international, independent, not-for-profit, membership-based organisation.

The FSC was founded in 1993 in response to the Rio Earth Summit to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests.
